Once in a while city building games become some of the most popular games online. Travian is one such game. It belongs to a category of massively multiplayer online games which have become all the rage throughout the gaming universe. Just to get a feel for how huge this is, just think – apart from the original German and the mandatory English, the game has been translated into over 40 languages, some as far-flung as Hindi and Japanese to cater to the 5 million players who play from over 300 servers across the globe. It was developed by Travian Games, a German company, and has become one of the most played and popular online games ever. It is set around the time of the Roman Empire and the building of your city resembles the founding of a new Roman settlement. But if everyone had to be part of the Roman Empire, everyone would have the same abilities and that would just be boring so you can choose between Gauls, Teutons and Romans, each civilization having its own advantages and disadvantages which will play out as you build your city.
The game begins after you set up an account. You will be led through a tutorial which will teach you the basics of setting up and running your village. At first you will be given a bare village with nothing but a single building – your own home, empty plots to build other buildings and special plots where you can build farms, mines, lumber mills and other resource gathering objects. These resources are extremely important because you will need them to expand your village and grow it into a huge city. These are called resource fields and you will have 18 of them, all at the same basic level 0. Every village will have a different combination of resources so you will have to be careful about which resource level you advance and to what level you advance it. Some resources like iron and food are very important while others like clay are not that essential.
But these are only the things you do in times of peace, and peace never lasts long. You will be given immunity for a while when you start off but once it wears off, get ready to fight. since resources are a premium and other players are always looking to plunder your city, you should build up your army and defenses. Walls can offer some protection and you can hide a certain portion of your resources so that they do not get plundered.
But even with all these restrictions, you will have to find your own way of playing – would you prefer being part of an unbeatable alliance or would you rather stand-alone and indomitable? It is all about strategy and how effectively you use your resources. Just remember your civilization’s strengths and weaknesses – play to your strengths and learn to make up for your weaknesses and you will be able to enjoy this game for a long, long time.
